Truffle Hunting in the Istrian Peninsula

We started with a drive into the countryside in Croatia - it was a rainy morning and the fog was lifting from the mountains as we circled into the valley to to truffle farm. Once we arrived, we were greeted by Marija, the who owns the truffle exporting business with her husband and the rest of her family. Recently they have also begun providing immersive experiences to guests - truffle hunting with their dogs, a gastronomic truffle meal with paired wines, behind the scenes access. This morning we were going truffle hunting in the woods with her husband and their newest (and most excited) truffle hunting dog, Skye. She described to us the way they train the dogs for hunting truffles and why they use dogs and not pigs (pigs will just eat all the truffles so they lose a good bit of their merchandise if they hunt with pigs). Also, later in the season into the fall is when the even rarer white truffles appear, which can be thousands of Euros per pound. They get a good amount of business for these, from Asian markets and high end restaurants. We got suited up in rain boots and waterproof jackets and trudged into the forest with Skye and his owner. After a very soggy walk we came back to the main lodge with 3 of our very own truffles! Marija cleaned them and we sampled their truffle cheeses, honey, and then she cooked us truffle eggs with our own shaved truffles on top. Was the most incredible, immersive experience and a wonderful morning - these are the kind of memories I love to share and book for my clients.
